Kid-friendly Winter Activities to Try in the Hamptons

Winter is the best time to take the kids to the Hamptons.  The cold season, the snow, and the many opportunities for kid-friendly activities truly make this neighborhood a great vacation destination for the family.

Museum tour. Kids can let their imagination run wild while learning at the Children’s Museum of the East End. Founded in 1997 by seven mothers from the East End, Children's Museum of the East End (CMEE) was inspired to promote child learning through play. According to CMEE, the museum offers over 7,000 square feet of exhibition and program space designed by Lee Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership.

The museum upholds its mission “to spark imagination and foster learning for children of all backgrounds and abilities and to build strong connections within the East End community by providing playful experiences.” This mission is achieved through educational exhibits and programs, such as the hands-on artwork making at the CMEE’s Drop-In Art Studio, a read-along session with an upside-down library book, a 9-hole miniature golf course that teaches principles of physics, among others.

Skating. After an enriching activity at the museum, the kids can glide all they want at the Buckskill Winter Club, an open air ice skating rink open Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7.p.m. The rink offers after-dusk entertainment: twinkly lights are turned on for "firefly" skating until 9:30 in the evening. In addition, the winter club has a cozy club house with an open fire and full service snack bar where parents can warm up and sip a cup of hot soup or European hot chocolate while watching their kids skate on the ice. Skating starts at $17 ($8-$19 younger than 15) and skate rentals cost $7 to $9.

If you wish to enjoy skating with your kids, Long Island Newsday recommends skating in nearby ponds. When the temperature plunges below freezing for a week or more and thick ice forms on the Town Pond and Hook Pond, visitors can skate amid some of the village's most beautiful sceneries.

Sweets shopping. Because kids love candies and chocolates, take them to the Fudge Company in The Hamptons, a 30 year-old factory that’s also every child’s Willy Wonka dream. The Fudge Company is a family-owned business located in the heart of the Main Street, Southampton. It offers 13 flavors of fudge, 20 varieties of ice cream complete with soft serve and toppings, rich chocolates, and over 400 different types of candy like gummies saltwater taffy, penny candies, and more.
